Character Choice

Before you fill in your application, here are a few tips on character choice :

You cannot apply for 'God', or any of the gods in religions whether real -Jesus, Yahweh, Thor- or fictional -Alanis Morisette as God in Dogma-.

Characters such as Angels and Demons however are fine as long as they come from a fictional, literary or pop-culture source.

There can be no duplications, Gabriel in Angel Sanctuary is the same for our purposes as Gabriel from Constantine, just like Subaru from X and Subaru from Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles.

The character must be from a fictional published or televised source. Celebrities, and original or fanfiction characters need not apply. Historical personages are available if they are a)dead and not likely to annoy anyone and b)can be found in fictional sources. Essentially, you can't play George Bush, but Lincon would be ok if he's, for example, the Simpson's version.

Canon characters ~ Angel Sanctuary

If you are applying for an Angel Sanctuary character, that is a character from the canon backdrop of the game, your character will start with the knowledge he or she had at the beginning of book 4, when Sarah dies and Adam Kadamon freezes the world. You unfortunately can't pick the point in canon that your character comes from.

If you are applying for a Greater Angel or a Satan, please make sure to answer with the extra information asked in the application form. Other players will be looking to you for information, so don't apply for a Greater Angel or a Demon if you can't be very active (appearance in more than a log or a network posting a week).

Additionally, Hell and Heaven at times use canon characters to further plot. You are fully able to apply for and take over these characters. We will be doing our best to use them sparingly, and welcome your applying for them. We'd rather have active players developing them, than sit on them outselves. Double check with the Taken Character list (Available NPCs wont appear on it. ex. Kurai and Arachne) and if you're worried about backround, give us an email and we'll help fill you in. Basically only Rosiel and Mad Hatter/Belial are taken at this point in the game.

Heaven or Hell? Fight!

Once you have chosen your character, it's time to decide his role in the war about to erupt. (We can not promise to give you your first choice, if the sides are too unbalanced we may need to assign people where they are needed.)

Imagine your character just died.
Where would he end up, in your opinion? In Heaven, Hell, or Purgatory?

Did your character sin in his previous life?
Does he accept authority? Is he rebellious?
Is he a believer or a skeptic?
Is he neutral? Or does he have very contrasted opinions?

Please note that all characters will start as demons in Hell or archangels in Heaven, and will then work their way towards the Choir or the Satan of their choice. It is possible to become a Satan or a Great Angel, but through IC means only. Plot your way to the top.

Is anyone else out there? I don't know what happened. I woke up, and everything was... like this. Frozen and weird and just... really fucked up. More fucked up than all that shit from before.
I don't even know how I ended up in Tokyo.

Fuck. Is there anyone here? I don't know if you use the Internet wherever you're from, but where I'm from, we can use computers to communicate. Kind of like a bulletin board, but hosted in virtual space… not the supermarket.

I basically set up a new network from scratch, since I can't reach any satellites or computer networks anywhere else in the world. Nothing will connect. Usenet, Telnet... the Internet... Nothing. Probably has something to do with the fact that time, as we know it, seems to have just... stopped?

Anyway, if anyone’s out there… you can use this networked journal system I created to post messages, chat, get information, whatever you want, really.

I set it up so you can send private messages to each-other, but it's not super secure. I wouldn't send any sensitive information over the network. I don't know who else might be reading.

Logistics of the Network

The board is run by Vincenzo, and enables you to post, message board style as you would in a normal LJ or other online community. Your character has found a computer, has somehow been able to find and log into the community, has created an account and uploaded user-pics, and can reveal what they choose to reveal on the journals. Even characters without any knowledge of technology will have the ability to simply log on and use the 'net', because it's a great way to encourage player activity and plot. Simply write your character as finding a laptop from some businessman or college kid, turning it on deliberately or accidentally, and you're good to go. The internet will automatically open to the message board when you try to connect.

Please note, the internet as we know it, Wikipedia, Google, everything else... is not accessable. You can't check your hotmail.

Also be aware that aside fromVincenzo the sysadmin, there is another NPC, Romero, who is very skilled hacker. He will have periodical access to your private conversations. He may pop in to chat with you and your co-plotters, or he may just copy-post the contents for everyone to see if he thinks it's particularly interesting and it will amuse him.

We have created a mathematical system based on your character's user-name, the calendar, and the date to establish Romero's fickle hacking whims, so it isn't random and we aren't targeting YOUR character specifically. Please bear in mind your private posts will have about a 15% chance of being posted for everyone to see, if he's so inclined. But, don't worry too much about it. Even if you qualify, he won't always post secrets. Chances are, he just wants to chat, because he's here too, and confused like everyone else. But please be aware that there is always the possibility he'll fuck you over for his amusement.

Nothing is 100% secret. If you MUST discuss a secret, do NOT post it in your journals, meet the other character in closed off area.

Hacking the network

If you would like to contribute to any of the possible plot threads relating to the journal and computer use, please contact the mods. Even if your character is robot from the future or the world's best genius hacker, you must clear anything potentially disruptive with the mods or your character could be shut off from the network. However, we like plot, so don't worry :) Just ask and we'll see what we can do!

Setting up the journals

Using the Journals is basically, exactly like using the normal journals on LiveJournal.
Your character simply posts to the main community and anyone can reply.

Please don't 'friend' character journals. There is no friend-add.

You only need to add and post to three communities to play this game: haec-hora, haec-hora-ooc and haec-hora-net.

First person posts belong on the main journal, haec-hora-net.
Third person logs belong the log community:haec-hora.
Everything else game-related (notices, presentations, fun memes etc.) belongs in the ooc community:haec-hora-ooc.

Privacy settings

'Private' settings are simply stated by writing [private to "character"] in the subject line if you feel it necessary to have private conversations.

However please note, all private messages can be read by the sysop.

For more details on the network, and how private information can be exposed or shared, please refer to the network.

Setting up a log

When setting up a log to the haec-hora log community, please follow the format below:

Subject :: Give you log a title
Body :: Who, What, Where, Rating (if rating is superior to PG-13, friends-lock)
Ratings follow standard american movie ratings of G, PG, PG-13, R, NC-17.

Who: Mikael and Uriel
Where: the cauldron of souls

Please note ::

There is no such thing as a "locked" log. All logs are open. Of course other characters need to have an excuse to be realistically in the same area, and if you are in a room with a closed door will have to knock or attempt to destroy the door.
Although no locked posts are allowed, there should be no eavesdropping in private areas. Your character can't stick a glass to the door to listen to things being said in private.
No backlogging. If a thread isn't finished in two weeks, wrap it up and move on. It's hard to keep an active story going when no one is on the same page.
Once you have moved forward in time, you cannot go back and add to the history. Try to keep it chronological.

Player hacking private entries

If you have a technologically advanced character, please contact the mods to request special privileges, such as Hacking.

It is very possible after-all, even the most secure networks can be hacked by someone with skill and time. This network is no exception, but we plan to keep it limited. This privilege should, ideally be accompanied by plot ideas and how you would incorporate it for the game's greater good. Players who offer contributions to the overall plot will be more likely to be granted abilities.

Please note,even with special permission, you also need player permission to hack the journals—any complaint Vincenzo, the NPC sysadmin, receives about abuse will result in players being cracked down upon, and 'changes' made to the system,

General

What is the plot?
Heaven and Hell are on the brink of war, which will largely be fought in the no-man's land between the two powers: Tokyo, Earth.

What is the setting?
You may choose Heaven, Hell or Modern day Tokyo, Japan. aka "Earth". Our earth as we know it, not your character's. There should be subtle differences. Their school doesn't exist or events never happened as they did in their world, unless they also happened in our world. History, Science ect. of Tokyo is as we would find it here, in our world.
Depending on your alignment, you will be positioned in one of the three to start the game. You are not limited to one, and may travel as your abilities permit. However, Earth will be limited to central Tokyo.

July 22th, 1999?
That's right. July 1999 is the date Kaori Yuki gave for Setsuna's destruction of Tokyo, we've assigned the 22nd to coincide with the start of the game. The date doesn't apply in Hell or in Heaven, or your character's former world, so who knows the actual date?

And yes. That meanshe game officially begins on the 22nd of July.

Characters

What fandoms are allowed?
Any and all fandoms are allowed. Movies, Comics, TV, cartoons. Any fictional character is probably alright (please check the applications guidelines for historical figures and god-like characters).

How many characters can I have?
The character limit has been set at three, unless a players asks for permission and demonstrates that they are keeping up with tags, logs and the plot. We prefer quality to quantity.

Can I play more than one character from the same series/book/fandom?
From the Get-go? No. If you really MUST have a second from the same series, please contact the mods and we will discuss it with you.
If you are able to demonstrate that you are keeping up with characters, tags and plots, and receive permission from the mods for extra characters, we will probably relax this rule, as you have contributed to the multi-fandom aspect we are trying to achieve.

How does magic work?
Generally, it doesn't. Please see Powers for details on the different races' starting abilities.

Harry Potter? My character is a huge Harry Potter fan! Can I break the 4th wall?
Ask the player/Players involved. Otherwise, No. If we find this being abused for meta-gaming purposes, it will become a solid NO.

My character isn't human/is a robot/is a cat-person. How will that work?
You will become either a demon, an angel or a human. Your character retains their personality. You MUST contact a mod before you apply as anything that isn't going to translate well into the game, such as a Transformer, Tachikoma, Digimon/Pokemon/Godzilla or inanimate object (ect) with a soul so we can discuss it.

My character has a magical weapon/pet/technology etc. in their canon can I keep it?
No. You wake up in Shinjuku with the clothes on your back and nothing in your pockets.

My character is a genius and can do everything and anything. How will that work?
Frankly speaking, It wont, and this may not be the game for you. Just because a character is a genius in their canon, doesn't mean it applies to our real world, or other canons. Maybe the people in your canon are just all really stupid and your character is above the average. You must never ask a player to dumb down their character for yours. Likewise even genius' have faults and points in which they are not geniuses. Everyone needs to be able to play in the sandbox. Don't ruin it for others by trying to hog the spotlight. Will it really be fun for you if your character could do anything and everything?

Someone has dropped the character I want to play... what happens?
Apply for them. If you are accepted we will put them through the cauldron and let you start fresh.

Can characters be killed off?
Yes. It's possible, it's even likely. A war is brewing after all. Please see Character Death for more information on the death system.

Can characters talk to God/Adam Kadamon/Lucifer?
If they speak to you, yes. And between us, you should probably listen very carefully if they do.
However, at the start of the game, they will not be available as they are sealed in their respective palaces.
The ones leading in their absence, Rosiel or Mad Hatter would be more likely to interact with characters, although since they are the leaders of Heaven and Hell, they will not join just any conversation.
Of course, you're friendly Sysop, Vincenzo will often be available for chatter, and there's always Romero. Chances are they will talk to you frequently! How much you listen is your decision.

Can I choose my choir? My sin?
Characters will either start as humans, demons in Hell or archangels in Heaven, and will then work their way towards the Choir or the army of the Satan of their choice.

Can my pan-fandom character be a Satan? A Greater Angel?
It is possible to become a Satan or a Great Angel, but through IC means only. Plot your way to the top.
The odds are we will kill off characters to make way for new blood, but all promotions will be made in-game for in-character actions.

Hell's Hounds

The hounds of hell roar in the night

Excluding the Royal Army of Gehenna [by far mostly exterminated by Heaven's decimation of Gehenna], Hell's armies are not classically structured. Due to the nature of the denizens of Hell, very few are content to follow any source of authority.

However, many demons pledge themselves to others, creating branches of loyalty, based upon their whims and desires, stronger than any pledged oath. The demons who follow Hell, follow out of loyalty, love, or hatred. The Great Satans have all built vast armies of followes loyal insofar as it is in their advantage.

There is one rallying cry however, and that is the knowledge that Heaven shows no mercy to the Demons, and that for their very survival, they must unite against the armies of Heaven.

The Mad Hatter, in Lucifer's name, 'leads' the armies of Hell insofar as they are armies or can be led.

Hell is largely a vicious, strongest takes all, land. It is in the best interest of weaker demons to use cunning and intelligence to subvert the stronger, or to ally themselves out of necessity for survival.

Powers

Heaven

Angels are more powerful, faster, and more resilient than the average human, but are best at long range or when fighting in open areas where they can rely on their speed, especially when coming up against demons who are physically stronger and less fragile.

Flight
Aura projection. (Can be augmented by aura concentrators)
Barrier generation.
Teleportation around Earth, and to and from Hades, Shamahim, and Anagura through Earth.
For Virtues only: healing non-mortal wounds. (Compensated by lower fighting abilities.)

Greater Angels and their powers:

Gabriel :: Water-based attacks.
Mikael :: Fire-based attacks.
Raphael :: Wind-based attacks | Moving souls between bodies | limited resurrection.
Raziel :: Empathy (random)
Rosiel :: Regeneration | Electricity and wire manipulation | Metamorphosis | Angel creation.

Hell

Short bursts of flight, able to hover.

Satans and their powers:

Astaroth :: Transforming into a snake.
Barbelo :: Creating illusions.
Mad Hatter :: Creating illusions. Traveling in shadows, laying curses

Earth

Humans have no special powers but they do have access to any weaponry which would be realistically available in the frozen city of Tokyo.

Weaker, slower than both angels and demons, humans have the advantage of advanced technology which isn't available in Hell. They also have the opportunity to choose a field of specialization, whether it is medicine, or hacking, or chemical engineering.

Hades

Hades, where the Cauldron of Souls exists, is closed to both Angel and demon. None are admitted, save the souls of the dead humans, who await judgement, and the Angel of Death, Uriel.

The sublimation of purged souls, Enra-O watches over the souls as they purify themselves to be sent back to Heaven or Earth, or fall into Hell.

Souls that are not strong of mind and who are not able to purify themselves, fall into darkness and become ghouls, preying on the stronger souls existing and wandering Hades. These ghouls eventually fall into Hell as demons. If a soul is successful at purifying itself, it may be reborn on earth, and the purest of souls may enter heaven, reborn as Angels.

The good news: if you want to play a pan-fandom character, you need to know very little about the world of Angel Sanctuary, since you will be discovering it at the same time as your character.

Game premice

Calendars show the date to be July 22nd, 1999. Clocks, and watches show that time stopped approximately at 12pm. Noon. It was a cool but sunny day. It’s still a cool, sunny day.

You have woken up either on the Time-Frozen earth, no longer frozen and quite likely bewildered, in Heaven, or Hell, reincarnated as an Angel or a Demon.

In Heaven, the Angels are meeting to discuss Hell's new weapon, and the ramifications. In Hell, the demons are near panicked, remembering the last invasion which all but destroyed Gehenna.

No one knows, truly, what has happened, and no one can say what will happen.

Calendars show the date to be July 22nd, 1999. Clocks, and watches show that time stopped approximately at 12pm. Noon. It was a cool but sunny day. It’s still a cool, sunny day.

People are frozen exactly how they been when whatever happened, happened. They are frozen in the streets mid-stride, shopping, laughing, walking their dogs. They're commuting, hurrying to lunch meetings. Some are asleep in their bed, or cooking lunch. Some are stuck in Shinjuku lunch hour traffic. The subways and trains are in mid-tunnel, crammed with kindergardeners in their matching yellow hats, heading for the zoo.

From Heaven and Hell, angels and demons gaze upon this abomination... Assiah, Earth, has been, in their eyes, used to test a new dangerous weapon that could mean the end of the standstill between the two powers.

In Heaven, the Angel Lord has finally returned after centuries of confinement... the once soft-spoken and wise angel is now bent on revenge against those who sealed him away.
In Hell, Lucifer stirs in his slumber, and the land shakes. The Seven Great Satans are meeting in the depths of Shiol.

This can only mean one thing... the third great war between Heaven and Hell is about to begin.

History of the realms

The neverending struggle between Heaven and Earth

Birth of Lucifer and Mikael (the first set of twins)
Birth of Rosiel and Alexiel (the second set of twins)

The First War of Heaven and Hell

Lucifer is made to fall, to give humanity free will.
He goes to Eden, intent on raping and killing Alexiel but falls in love with her.
Lucifer and the fallen angels lose, the war and are exiled to Hell.
Hell is in need of sustenance, and Lucifer pours his power into the land, becoming the land.

The Second War of Heaven and Hell

Disgusted by the corruption eating away at Heaven after the Creator locked himself in Etemenanki, Alexiel rebells against Heaven and fights for the armies of Hell.
Alexiel fights her brother, Rosiel, but does not have it in her to kill him, so she seals him away on Assiah (Earth).
The demons lose the war. Angels decimate the highest pit of hell, Anagura.
Alexiel is branded by the mark of the fallen angel, and sentenced to a never ending cycle of reincarnations in which every life is difficult, and ends in a violent, hateful death

Abaddon

Abaddon, child of Lucifer and Barbelo, is one of many huge and terrifying dragons that lurk in the deepest levels of hell. He was exiled to Astaroth's labyrinth because he was cursed with a magic gaze that kills everyone he lays eyes on.

He has killed many people, albeit often involuntarily.

Other dragons

Abaddon, while one of the most powerful, is only one of the many dragons of Hell (Leviathan, a Satan, is also one of these powerful beasts).

The Vampires

The lost children of Anagura

Like the evils, the vampires, other demons inhabiting Anagura, were slaughtered by the angels during the Second War between Heaven and Hell. Very few vampires are left to roam the depts of the inferno.

Noise

Noise and Voice's family was decimated during the war, and they are the only two left. Noise is a very quiet and studious girl, so her sudden change in personality surprised her brother... as it turns out she had been possessed by the Satan Belial.

She loves her brother more than anything, and is willing to go through any sacrifice for his sake.

Voice

Voice is Noise's twin brother, and they share a pair of wings between them. Due to his difficult childhood, Voice had lost his love of life until he met Kurai and she smiled at him. Difficult, with a quick temper, he is never taken seriously by Kurai, which wounds him deeply.

Jealous of Kurai's affection to Setsuna, he will cause a number of catastrophes, but will finally, at the sight of Kurai's tears, lay his life on the line to save Alexiel's reincarnation.

Relationships

Relationships, their impact, their consequences and their pitfalls are very different from one realm to the next.

Heaven

In Heaven, all angels are taught to love and worship God above all else. Any form of affection directed towards other angels (and, even worse, towards humans or demons) is therefore forbidden, because robs from the Creator of all things the adoration that should be his alone, but also because it bypasses Genesis and makes free reproduction between angels possible.

The result? Love is a sin punishable by death, or, if with a demon, punishable by wing removal.

Some have escaped that verdict by falling to Hell because of love, or, like Belial, who became a Satan known as Mad Hatter, because of lust. Children of angels, often deformed and characterized by telltale crimson eyes, have been conceived, and hide within the lower level slums of Heaven, where they are eliminated by the Thrones through stings, traps, and poisoned food.

For an angel, love and death are one.

Hell

In Hell, there are no rules... the more virtues sullied, the better.

Nevertheless, some demons -up to the Lord of Hell, if the rumours are true- have found themselves bound in a passionate love for one person. A love as single-minded as the one angels vow to feel towards their God.

Earth

Earth is the only realm where all sorts of relationships coexist, from nuns married to God to harems harbouring multiple wives for one man.

But, in between those extremes, it is the world where the common ideal is that of marriage and "happily ever after" with one person. A situation that would be utterly impossible in Heaven or Hell.

The Ten Commandments of RP

1. Thou shalt not metagame (use ooc knowledge) to further thy character.
2. Thou shalt not god-mode (move another player's character without their consent).
3. Thou may not land a punch, just throw it.
4. Thou shalt be realistic when it comes to thy character's abilities.
5. Thou shalt accept defeat if it comes down to it.
6. Thou shall not kill. (without expressed permission)
7. Thou shalt accept responsibilities for your actions and/or mistakes. (see rules 4 and 5)
8. Thou shalt be friendly or at least polite when dealing with other players
9. Thou shalt have fun!
10. Thou art not a special snowflake. (follow the rules please)

Fighting, in details

This game uses negotiation-style fighting. That is, battles are played in a turn-based way, where each of the opponents describe what they are attempting to do to the other, and deciding what blows land on their characters and how mych damage is realistically taken.
This goes on until one character loses, retreats, or comes to an arrangement with the other. [more]

Bad: Mad Hatter rushed forward and punched Mikael in the face. She heard the crunch of bone under her fist, the exhilarating feel of the blood on her fingers. Mikael teetered back, shocked.

Good: Mad Hatter rushed forward, coming in quickly, at an angle, towards the Great Power. She pulled back her arm and threw a punch towards Mikael's face.

After this posting, it is up to Mikael's player to decide if, realistically, the punch landed or not, and how much damage it caused.

It is important to always keep in mind the 4th commandment: realism.
